The Bournemouth-based duo are staying on a roll with their second outing on Subtitles in recent months, this time taking us back to the future with '2098' and switching up for the funky 'Yoghurt Brainwave' on the flip - here's what Data Transmission had to say:
After returning TeeBee’s Subtitles (now Subtitles UK) imprint to the fore with their May release Featherweight/Glued, Ulterior Motive are back with their second offering on the label. In case you’ve been off listening to funky house or something, UM are the Bournemouth production duo currently setting the pace in fresh faced, edgy-as-f*** d’n’b.
2098 does pretty much what it says on the tin, as Ulterior Motive paint a twisty, bassy, ultra-dark vision of the future. There’s a hint of the past in here as well though, mainly in the low down bass line (you’ll need a fairly weighty system or decent headphones to hear it, mind) which has enough analogue warmth to take you right into summer.
To something altogether different on the other side – Yoghurt Brainwave, bizarre name aside, is amongst the best we’ve heard from these two so far. Fairly minimal drums give space to a lovely, bouncy, bluesy b-line and a cheeky little end of the bar wobble. Despite a decidedly more chilled out vibe than their other tracks, this one still delivers big time. More like this please chaps.
