MC Fats is a dedicated veteran of the drum & bass scene in every sense of the word, with decades of experience representing the world over and laying down vocals for some of the biggest tracks to date. A resident for institutions such as Eastside, True Playaz, Metalheadz and London’s super club Fabric, Fats has a huge stage presence and his talents are always in high demand. As an artist in his own right, he’s worked with A Sides, Dillinja, Pendulum, Alix Perez, Calibre and Hype. Bringing the attributes of traditional MC and singer together in an amazing fusion, Fats knows how to rock the crowds and raise the vibe in true style.

Developing a style which mixed singing with the more traditional ragga-based chat, he earned the nickname Singing Fats. Eager to get involved with music as much as possible, Fats became a regular fixture across London’s pirate radio scene and even set-up his own station, Stage FM. His first links with the jungle scene came through mutual friends at the legendary Underground record shop, where he met DJ Hype. The pair would later go on to record the anthem ‘Peace, Love and Unity’ for Hype’s label True Playaz, an all-time classic track that kick-started a career for Fats as one of the most popular MCs in drum & bass.
Over the years, Fats has forged a lasting musical partnership with another of drum and bass’s long-standing veterans, A Sides. Whether in the studio together or performing live on stage, they complement each others’ strengths so well across a range of styles. From the hard-hitting beats of ‘Crazy’ to the soulful rolling breaks of ‘What U Don’t Know,’ Fats and A Sides have a sound that’s both powerful and emotive.
Fats has also worked a huge number of other producers over the years, including Kenny Ken, Patife, Blue Skin, Alix Perez, Pascal, Shut Up & Dance and Potential Bad Boy. With a strong delivery and a rich soul-infused voice, his talents are always in demand and he’s found himself involved in a range of musical projects. Not only has he worked with the likes of Pendulum, Influx UK and Dillinja, appearing on their respective albums, he’s also worked with Calibre on drum & bass as well as downtempo tracks. Whether he’s providing vocals for music with a traditional song structure or more club-based tracks, Fats can tailor his voice to suit without losing any of his natural depth or soul. It’s no surprise then that, alongside his artist career, he also established himself as a well-respected vocal coach and regularly teaches at a local college in Essex.
In 2009, Fats has been going strong performing alongside the likes of Dillinja, Lemonde and Sigma and will be hosting alongside Randall in the ‘Legends of Drum & Bass’ room at this year’s D&BA Awards. The Break remix of his track, ‘Down the Line’ with Alix Perez, is currently tearing up dancefloors with a further remix of a Fats classic (‘What U Don’t Know’) by Total Science set to appear on Eastside later this year.
He has travelled the world over, performing to crowds in a host of countries ranging from Japan to Canada to Brazil. Although his sound is unique, it works well with a range of different DJs from Hype to Storm and has an appeal that crosses the whole spectrum of drum & bass fans. Despite his many years of experience in the drum & bass scene, Fats has retained the ability to constantly sound fresh and energise a DJ’s set. Out of preference, he loves to play in a more intimate club environment where he can move amongst the crowd and really make a connection. Always down-to-earth and appreciative of the fans that keep the music strong, Fats is still looking forward and keen to take drum & bass to new places. He's recently linked with A Sides again in the studio, so listen out for his distinct vocal tones on the Eastside bosses next LP due Spring 2010.
